Watson Hill Farm Go Low Carbon Solar PV Case Study

At Go Low Carbon, we work with farms and agri-businesses to cut costs, improve energy independence, and reduce carbon emissions through tailored solar PV solutions. Here is one case study to demonstrate how we can help.

Agriculture has always been about working with nature, and now, with rising energy costs and increasing sustainability demands from supply chains, the sector is leading the way in adopting renewable energy.

At Go Low Carbon, we work with farms and agri-businesses to cut costs, improve energy independence, and reduce carbon emissions through tailored solar PV solutions. For many farmers, renewable energy isn’t just about “going green” it’s about protecting margins, meeting supplier requirements, and safeguarding the future of the business.

One example comes from Watson Hill Farm, a dairy farm that invested in a 50 kWp solar PV system in 2022. Their robotic milking system was consuming significant amounts of electricity, pushing up running costs at a time when prices were already volatile.

By switching to solar, the farm now generates much of its own power on-site. Over the system’s lifetime, it is expected to save around £340,000 and cut emissions equivalent to planting nine football fields of trees. Beyond the financial benefits, the project also helped Watson Hill Farm meet the sustainability benchmarks set by ARLA, proof that renewable energy can deliver both commercial and environmental gains.

Why this matters for agriculture

Whether you’re running dairy operations, arable land, or mixed farming, energy use is one of the biggest overheads and one of the biggest opportunities. Solar PV allows farms to:

• Lower operational costs by generating clean power on-site
• Reduce exposure to volatile energy prices
• Meet the sustainability requirements of suppliers and regulators
• Improve energy security and resilience for the future
