Frontier supports UK growers with early adoption of new herbicide Fundatis®
Following approval in early August of Fundatis® – a new residual herbicide for use in cereals – Frontier Agriculture has become the first agricultural business to take on the product ready to supply UK growers.
Developed by FMC, Fundatis® includes 200g/l of bixlozone (known also by its commercial name ISOFLEX® active) and 125g/l of beflubutamid – both of which are new actives in the UK agricultural industry.
Speaking of the early adoption, Frontier head of crop protection, Nigel Foster, says: “We understand our customers need to constantly adapt to meet new challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable crop production.
“The development of Fundatis® from FMC offers a welcome solution for winter wheat and barley growers in the battle against increasing weed pressures and we’re really pleased to be able to bring this agronomic advancement to our growers.”
The Chemical Regulations Division (CRD) gave approval for the use of Fundatis® at pre-emergence in winter barley, as well as both pre- and post-emergence in winter wheat to aid the control of key grassweeds including black-grass and ryegrass, as well as broadleaf species. Trials work by FMC has shown potentially promising results in other cereals, as well as oilseed rape, potatoes, pulses and sugar beet, and the product’s ability to be tank mixed or sequenced with other suitable products will support growers to build versatile, integrated weed management strategies.
Frontier’s agronomy advisors and crop protection teams are already supporting farmers with applications.
This comes as many growers are finding that weeds like Italian ryegrass are becoming an increasing problem across the country, with some heralding it as a greater threat than black-grass due to its more competitive biology and the fact that one single plant can produce 5,000 seeds. As a result, traditional control methods are proving much less effective and resistance issues with existing herbicide options have been a concern.
Nigel continues: “Growers have to contend with a growing number of factors influencing productivity every season, and they invest heavily in their crops to ensure they can be the best quality for the markets they supply.
“As well as testing and trialling these technologies ourselves we also need to ensure the right solutions are then available on farm, supported by the right expertise so that growers see the best returns.”
Jason Spencer, key account manager at FMC adds: “To be able to bring a new herbicide into winter wheat and winter barley crops, with two new active ingredients and a new mode of action in cereals, is highly exciting both for FMC and the wider industry, especially given the challenges presented to farmers now and in the future in regards to weed pressure, available actives and resistance management. FMC is committed to developing new tools for the farmers toolbox.”
